A light-emitting diode (LED) is a two-lead semiconductor light source. It is a p–n junction diode, which emits light when activated. When a suitable voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons.

Light emitting diodes, commonly called LEDs, are real unsung heroes in the electronics world. ... Basically, LEDs are just tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit. But unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, they don't have a filament that will burn out, and they don't get especially hot.

Nov 11, 2016 - But, even better, there are LEDs(light-emitting diodes) that are just as bright as bulbs, last virtually forever, and use hardly any energy at all. An LED is a special type of diode (a type of electronic component that allows electricity to flow through in only one direction).
