Some Personal Details and the End
Virchow married Rose Mayer in 1850. They had six children: Karl, who became a chemist; Hans, who became an anatomist; Adele; Ernst; Marie; and Hanna Elisabeth.

Apart from Karl, who died aged 61, the Virchow children enjoyed rather long lives – particularly for the era they were alive in – living to be 87, 99, 84, 85 and 90 years old respectively.

Rudolph Virchow died from heart failure at the age of 80 in Berlin on September 5, 1902. He had fractured his thigh falling from a tramcar in January of that year. Although at first he seemed to be recovering, he gradually fell deeper into ill-health. He was buried in the Old St.-Matthäus Churchyard in Schöneberg, Berlin. Rose was buried beside him following her death in 1913.

While experimenting with several agents, he became aware of the importance of the vitamin folic acid, present in the blood. In the slave-like textile mills in distant Bombay, many workers – especially women – were affected with anaemia due to poor nutrition. When these workers were given marmite (yeast extracts), they would recover. It was later found that the active agent in marmite was folic acid. Farber figured that treating leukaemia-afflicted cells with the acid would cure them, but to his horror, he found that the compound made the cells grow even faster.

Today, we know that this is because folic acid helps cells make more DNA and RNA, molecules needed for growth. At that time, Farber quickly reasoned that if he could do the reverse and stop folic acid being used by using an ‘anti-vitamin’, perhaps he could cure leukaemia. But where could he get an anti-vitamin that could do this? He then remembered Yella, his old friend at Harvard, who he knew was at Lederle Labs and, most importantly, whom he recognised as the grandmaster of making such compounds.

In the late 1940s, Farber wrote to Subbarow, who immediately and generously sent Farber a range of folic-acid-like compounds that he and his team had painstakingly synthesised for the first time. These were remarkable feats in chemical synthesis, never accomplished before that. Remarkably, Farber’s hunch proved to be right and some of these molecules stopped leukaemia dead in its tracks. Farber had a patient then, a child suffering from the disease. In an era before countless consent forms, approvals and clinical trials, Farber decided to directly treat the child with the compounds Subbarow had sent him. The child was very sick and on the verge of death. Miraculously, once injected with the compound, his white blood cells count started dropping to normal and days later he could walk.

Methotrexate, one of the folate antagonists that Subbarow made in the 1940s, went on to become the first choice drug against leukaemia, saving thousands of lives. It remains widely used to this day. In addition to these enormous contributions, Subbarow and his team also made compounds that treated filariasis, apart from developing other antibiotics. His immense contributions are much better appreciated today, decades after his death in 1948. And somehow this unassuming scientist with a fascination for biochemistry and a relentless quest for discovery helped transform cancer research.

Farber’s and Subbarow’s stories are beautifully described in Siddhartha Mukerjee’s Pulitzer-Prize-winning book The Emperor of All Maladies (2010).

Sunil Laxman is a scientist at the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, where his research group studies how cells function and communicate with each other. He has a keen interest in the history and process of science, and how science influences society.

Josef Issels
Josef M. Issels
Born 21 November 1907
Mönchengladbach
Died 11 February 1998 (aged 90)
Nationality German
Occupation Physician
Known for Promoting the Issels treatment, an unproven alternative treatment for cancer
Josef M. Issels (November 21, 1907 – February 11, 1998) was a German physician known for promoting an alternative cancer therapy regimen, the Issels treatment. He claimed to cure cancer patients who had been declared incurable by conventional cancer treatments. During Issels' lifetime, his methods were controversial, and in 1961 he was charged with fraud and manslaughter for allegedly promising fraudulent cancer cures and for the subsequent deaths of patients under his care who refused standard cancer treatment.[1] An initial conviction on the manslaughter charge was overturned in 1964 on the grounds that Issels had genuinely believed that his therapy could cure cancer.[1][2] The Issels treatment is currently considered unproven and ineffective as a treatment for cancer.[1]

Early life Edit

Born in Mönchengladbach in 1907, Issels received his medical degree in 1932 from the University of Würzburg.[3] According to an obituary in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Issels made a name for himself as a young physician several years later by successfully operating in makeshift conditions on an ill passenger aboard a German steamer.[3]

Later, during the Second World War, Issels reportedly petitioned to resign his membership in the Nazi Party when he was ordered to stop treating Jewish patients. His petition was granted, but he was immediately drafted and sent to the Eastern Front as a Wehrmacht combat medic.[3] Captured by the Red Army, Issels spent several years in Soviet prisoner-of-war camps until his release at the end of 1945.[3]

Issels treatment Edit

Main article: Issels treatment
Issels believed that cancer was caused by the weakening of the human immune system and hence had to be cured by strengthening it again. However, he did not dispute the importance of conventional cancer therapies like surgery and chemotherapy, and did in fact use them when treating his patients. Issels did not advocate a panacea-like new therapy, but rather prescribed various neglected, forgotten, or non-mainstream treatments, such as the Coley Vaccine pioneered by William Coley, hyperthermia, where Manfred von Ardenne researched its effectiveness in cancer.

Issels opened his Ringberg Clinic in Bavaria in 1951. As the clinic achieved greater fame, patients from around the world began to seek his treatment. However, other doctors did not approve of his practice, specifically the Bavarian Medical Council, which charged Issels with fraud and manslaughter. After a four-year legal battle, Issels' convictions on all charges were overturned, and his clinic was re-licensed. Issels centers and clinics continue to treat cancer patients around the world, with all types and stages of cancer.

Among his illustrious patients were Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley and British Olympic medallist Lillian Board, who both entered his Rottach-Egern clinic for treatment, but both died in spite of the Issels treatment.[4]

A review of Issels' claims by the American Cancer Society concluded that there was no evidence that treatment with Issels Combination Therapy or any related treatments were effective against cancer.[1]
